Project description
Quantum chemical calculations, together with subsequent reaction kinetics and continuum solvent modeling, are used to elucidate reaction mechanisms of oxidized peroxyradicals in the atmosphere, especially the hitherto completely unsolved gas-phase dimer formation process. We will also compute properties (e.g. saturation vapor pressures) for the products formed in these reactions. Modelling is performed in close collaboration with cutting-edge experiments. The results will help explain the formation and properties of secondary organic aerosol, and thus improve predictions of both air quality and future climate.
