Beskrivning av projektet
Atherosclerosis is initiated, when LDL particles become modified and aggregated in the arterial wall. This induces inflammation and development of atherosclerotic lesions. We have developed a test that can be used to assess the aggregation-susceptibility of LDL particles. The present projects are designed to analyze, whether inter-individual differences in LDL aggregation susceptibility can explain differences in the development of cardiovascular diseases and whether our test would improve the predictive power of conventional risk markers. We will also examine the possibilities to interfere with LDL accumulation by inhibiting LDL aggregation. We hope that the results will provide us mechanistic insights that may help in inhibiting, and even reversing the development of atherosclerotic lesions. In the best case scenario, both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases could benefit from the novel molecular information on atherogenesis.
