Project description
The Kuopio University Hospital bAVM and CCM registry aims to discover the impact that different biological backgrounds have on the clinical course and treatment outcome of brain arteriovenous-malformations (bAVM) and cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM). bAVMs and CCMs are vascular malformations that occur in the brain or spinal cord, and can cause death or disability due to fulminant hemorrhage, or epilepsy as a result of microhemorrhages. Several inherited and non-inherited mutations predispose to bAVM or CCM formation, and because of the different biological effects of these mutations, the progression, clinical course, and response to therapy may differ in different bAVMs or CCMs depending on the underlying molecular aberration. Knowledge of the effect of the underlying molecular aberrations on the untreated clinical course, risk of rupture or epilepsy, as well as response to therapy, will provide a basis for personalized management of bAVMs and CCMs.
