Beskrivning av projektet
This research project on the social history of insanity focuses on the position and everyday lives of the insane in early modern (ca. 1550–1750) Sweden and Finland. The study produces new information about underexplored topics in the fields of Finnish and Swedish history and social history. The history of the insane is updated by bringing forth their presence, agency, and participation in the local communities. The project revises the image of the meanings of insanity and the place and stigmatization of insane people in a time traditionally represented as a 'dark age' for the mentally deviant. The material consists of various types of early modern documents, including court records and printed treatises, and will be analysed from a comparative and intersectional approach with a tailored combination of mainly qualitative methods. The research is conducted at the Faculty of Social Sciences: History, University of Tampere and The Centre of Excellence in History of Experiences.
