Project description
We develop a model for the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with snow, with a unified treatment of the snow microphysics in the optical and microwave wavelengths. To support this development, we will collect a unique dataset of snow radiative, microphysical and macrophysical observations from two field campaigns. Using the new model and the comprehensive dataset, we will develop methods to retrieve snow characteristics from a synergy of optical and microwave measurements, and improve the treatment of snow in climate and numerical weather prediction models. These developments will form the basis of new satellite snow retrieval algorithms with improved accuracy, temporal and spatial resolution. In the future, the improved snow monitoring and modeling will benefit weather forecasts, water resource management, avalanche warnings and climate change mitigation and adaptation policies.
