Beskrivning av projektet
In the artic climate change induced warming leads to shrubification of peatlands. In Finland, approximately 200.000 reindeers are herded in the arctic environment. The reindeer herding area covers 123.000 km2. In the arctic region, peatlands cover 15 – 55% of land area depending on the area, and the average population density of up to 1.5 reindeer km2 causes grazing pressure especially on wet fens, the most important summer time feeding habitat due to their lower areal presence. Reindeers feed on leaves of shrubs and trees and thus are in the role of controlling the shrubification. This mitigates the shrubification induced earlier snowmelt. To ensure sustainable reindeer herding we expect to document scientifically how global warming will change the vegetation, greenhouse gas formation and microbes in it in arctic peatlands and if reindeer herding has a steering influence on this.
