Heart failure is a common form of cardiovascular disease and an important public health challenge worldwide. It is often caused by hypertension, which over time leads to cardiac growth and ultimately impairs the heart’s pump function. Heart failure is still lacking effective treatments that would reverse the underlying pathology and disease progression. Our preliminary findings indicate that the melanocortin system, which regulates important physiological functions such as inflammatory responses, has protective effects against pathologic hypertrophy and heart failure. In this project, we will investigate the underlying mechanisms by using in vitro and in vivo models as well as pharmacological and genetic tools. We will also test the therapeutic efficacy of new and selective melanocortin system-targeted drugs in experimental models of heart failure. Finally, human cells and samples will be used to evaluate the applicability of the findings for clinical diagnostics and drug development.
