Beskrivning av projektet
The project investigates writing in the past with digital methods. Writing has had a central role in the societies where it has been known. Yet, the very processes of writing are basically only known through the surviving texts themselves. The project approaches text production multimodally by examining how early medieval Latin documents are constructed of language, documentary formulae, and visual elements. Digital tools will be utilized to extract linguistic features, to detect recurrent expressions, and to compute the handwriting and the layout of the document. Network visualization helps in detecting patterns between scribes and writing places. Identifying writing practices and underlying communicative modes will result in a deeper understanding of the contents as well. The analysis is based on the Late Latin Charter Treebank, a corpus of 1,500 documents which I have annotated linguistically. The project will take place at the Department of Languages of the University of Helsinki.
