Beskrivning av projektet
Today one is told: Be curious! This research project originates from an interest in the current unreserved belief in curiosity in Western societies. For example, it is assumed that curiosity produces empathetic professionals, healthy individuals, and open-minded travellers. This study examines how and to what effect we have become curious and enchanted with curiosity. This research project is interdisciplinary and situated in the fields of cultural geography, cultural history, and education. The material consists of current and historical, publicly available texts and images that touch on curiosity (e.g. curricular texts, material produced by NGOs, scientific publications) produced in Finland and elsewhere. The analysis bring together genealogical, discursive, affective and postcolonial perspectives. This research project contributes to discussions on the politics of knowledge production, the production of (global) citizenship and the encountering of difference.
