The role of constitutive and adaptive immunity in driving evolution of pathogens is a central question in evolutionary biology and in medicine. Still, the antagonistic coevolution between host resistance and pathogen infectivity is poorly understood. CRISPR, the bacterial adaptive immunity system makes bacteria and their viruses, phages, good models for studying these coevolutionary dynamics. The aim of this project is to decipher functionality and diversity of bacterial CRISPR immunity and the coevolutionary effect in the phage, in nature and in the laboratory, both at molecular and phenotypic levels. Specifically, diversity and dynamics of CRISPR adaptation, the counter-adaptations in the phage, and the trade-offs between CRISPR immunity and bacterial life-history traits will be studied. The results have the potential to broadly impact field of microbiology and evolutionary biology by revealing molecular details on antagonistic coevolution.
