Beskrivning av projektet
Contemporary science shows that pollution from globalized chemicals value chains disperses into the Arctic ecosystem. The issue of Arctic chemical pollution raises critical questions about responsibilities and accountabilities across borders, as chemicals that are of emerging concern in the Arctic are linked to globalized activities taking place both within and outside the Arctic region. Addressing this issue, this project examines how international chemicals and waste law relates to and influences global chemicals value chains that threaten the Arctic ecosystem. Specifically, it explores the global value chains associated to 2 of the 17 chemical groups identified as pollutants of emerging Arctic concern. It aims to show that to mitigate chemical pollution, the prevalent use of toxic substances in global production chains needs better mapping, and international law requires new mechanisms for responsibility and accountability over toxics in trade.
