Species underpin all biological research and are important in many other ways for humanity, yet until now we have been unable to efficiently document the vast biodiversity of Earth with available methods. Emergent new and powerful methods in DNA sequencing technology have enabled the acquisition of breathtaking amounts of genomic data from organisms in straightforward and fast ways. In this project, a novel and efficient genomic tool - the Anchored Hybrid Enrichment method - will be used to study species delimitation, that is, assignment of specimens into species. As model organisms, we will use butterflies and moths. Many species groups to be studied represent cases of long-standing taxonomic instability due to the uncertain species boundaries. The project will demonstrate new standards for species delimitation under different evolutionary circumstances. The project aims at pointing the way ahead towards the genomic era for the scientific field of Taxonomy.
