Project description
Nanosized cellulose isolated from plant fibers (nanocellulose) is considered a popular candidate to, for example, replace oil-based plastics in the future. Nanocellulose is envisaged as a reinforcing phase (filler) in composites but unfortunately, nanocellulose tends to aggregate in a composite matrix, losing its high surface area and nanosized character. Overcoming the problem requires understanding of interfacial phenomena between the filler and the composite matrix. Bottoms-up establishes new viable routes for characterization of fundamental interfacial interactions between the nanocellulose and the polymer matrix. The target is approached via basic and advanced physico-chemical characterization to model systems containing nanocellulose. The obtained fundamental data is then utilized in the build-up of genuine composite materials, demonstrating the correlation between the properties of interfaces and the actual composites, paving way for future bio-based materials.
