The frequency of forest fires is increasing in boreal forests which are to a large extent on permafrost soils. Fires expose the permafrost to thawing which could increase the resease of carbon strored in permafrost soils to atmosphere. In this project, we studied the effect of wildfires on permafrost thawing and the interactions and mechanisms behind carbon and nitrogen cycle in sub-arctic forests in Northern Canada and Siberia. Our observations showed that fires combusted a large part of the organic soil layer on top of the mineral soil but the mineral soil was not as much affected. Fires also increased the thawing of permafrost and the active layer depth was increased. However, the carbon dioxide emission from soil to the atmosphere was decreased and the methane uptake increased shortly after fire. Our results also indicated that the soil organic matter deeper in the mineral soil was not affected by fire as its chemical quality and amount were not significantly changed.
