Project description
Catalysis is central to allowing cleaner, more efficient, and economically viable chemical production processes. If the energy required to drive catalytic processes could be harvested directly from the sunlight via photocatalysis, the possibility of replacing contemporary processes based on non-renewable fuels by sunlight could become a reality. Among important transformations, the direct conversion of methane into fuels and platform molecules has been for a long time a “holy grail” in chemistry. Very harsh conditions are needed for the conversion of methane into other molecules, which lead to high energy consumption and CO2 emissions, for example. This proposal will address this challenge and will focus on the photochemical and selective transformation of methane to higher hydrocarbons employing solar radiation as the energy input by developing efficient, selective, recoverable, stable and recyclable photocatalytic nanomaterials.
