Project description
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) has been a triumph for both technological and scientific achievements. The collision energy that LHC provides for the particle physics research is about 14 TeV. We, with hundreds of other accelerator developers, already look towards future, and are designing the next generation future particle accelerator. The Future Circular Collider (FCC) would provide collision energies several times higher than the LHC. The FCC will require strong dipole magnets to keep the particles within the accelerator circular trajectory. One of the most critical aspects is the magnet protection in case of sudden disturbance in the superconducting state. In the proposed research we will develop protection methods in collaboration with the magnet designers. The research is done using computer simulations and by using sub-scale model magnets for testing and analyzing different protection scenarios.
