Project description
The research project examines how ideals and expectations for societal relevance of scientific knowledge and research are articulated in Finland-Africa collaborations by policy makers, academics, university students, activists, the media and the general public. The project examines expectations for how biomedical and gender studies research collaborations in Africa should matter in their societal contexts. Three sub-studies are conducted: one on a vaccine trial, one on policy dialogue, one on gender scholarship. Qualitative methodologies, including multi-sited ethnography, interviews, memory work, media analysis and discourse analysis on public documents, are used. The results will be useful for a reflection of how different expectations could better meet. Enhanced understanding for imagined roles of science in society, and in development in Africa, is a prerequisite for better collaborations. The study responds to the urgent need of a deeper understanding of EU-Africa relations.
