Project description
Clean and efficient utilization of sustainable biomass and waste fuels as energy sources for the production of heat and electricity is of great importance. The qualities and properties of different biomasses vary a lot, and the ash forming elements may lead to several challenges in their use. Hygroscopic salts and deposits have shown to be the main cause of low-temperature corrosion in biomass combustion, and may lead to several challenges: deposit-build-up, decrease in heat transfer, corrosion in various parts of the boiler, and plugging of flue gas cleaning equipment. The aim of this research is to gain a deeper understanding of the properties, formation, behavior, and role of hygroscopic salts and deposits on low-temperature corrosion and operational issues in combustion and gasification of sustainable biomass and waste fuels. The goal is to pave the road for new solutions to improve energy efficiency, as well as to avoid corrosion and operational issues caused by hygroscopic salts.
