Project description
Traditionally inorganic materials such as metals, their oxides or alloys, with conductive and magnetic properties, have dominated in everyday electronic devices and their technological applications are many. By contrast, organic materials are usually thought of as non-magnetic and electrical insulators. The discovery of metallic conductivity in an organic complex led to intense efforts to prepare organic molecules that display conductive properties analogous to metal atoms. Most synthetic metals still require two components for charge transport, relying on electrons moving from one component to the other. This proposal advocates the design, synthesis and solid state engineering of organic radicals where the charge carriers are incorporated into one-component. An understanding of the design of organic radicals with unique chemical and electronic properties will afford new opportunities for organic materials that have potential applications in real world technologies.
