Project description
Climate change, biodiversity and local communities’ well-being are among the crucial sustainability targets of global policy. A growing number of private and civil society actors have developed non-state voluntary instruments as a means to achieve sustainable development. This has raised questions about whose interests and priorities are served, under what contexts, and with what consequences for society and environment. The overall aim of the project is to evaluate the contribution of PEFC, FSC and MSC certification schemes to biodiversity conservation, climate change, and well-being of local and indigenous communities in Finnish and Russian Arctic. To fulfill the aim, the researchers of this project will interview stakeholders in Finland and Russia and scrutinize the rule-making process of the schemes, analyze how the schemes correspond to national law and evaluate how standards of PEFC, FSC and MSC certification schemes contribute to combating climate change and biodiversity loss.
