Project description
This multidisciplinary project is on engaging nanocelluloses and UV-crosslinkable wood biopolymers in ink formulation for 3D bioprinting. The proposed research focuses on integrating diverse biofunctionalities to the biomimetic and UV-crosslinkable ink of nanocellulose/hemicelluloses via a variety of chemistry and engineering approaches, including creating gradient stiffness and anisotropic properties in the hydrogel matrices as well as broadening the tissue engineering (TE) application disciplines in form of nanocomposite bioinks with electroactive materials or hybrid bioinks with bioactive glass nanoparticles. A new generation of sustainable nanocellulose-based bioinks with predesigned biofunctionalities that are validated for 3D bioprinting in an organ-defined TE application is anticipated to open up new possibilities for utilizing cellulosic nanomaterials and woody biopolymers in high-value biomedical applications.
