Project description
The project aims at investigating the philosophical and theological views behind the 1277 Oxford Prohibitions, a major instance of medieval academic censorship. Whereas most scholarly effort has been to identify the prohibited views, especially those associated with Thomas Aquinas, the authors and views driving those prohibitions have received less scrutiny. In this project, the focus is on those views about the nature of matter, especially its relation with potentiality. Essential to understand this is the use of the notion of active potencies and inchoate forms to explain why and how matter is an entity of its own, in isolation from form, and how substantial change is possible. It will be argued that these authors operate within the framework of the Augustinian tradition in natural philosophy and the aim is to identify and map strands within this tradition. The project will bring new insights into the academic freedom and alternative theories on nature, matter and change.
