Project description
Recent efforts towards creating a quantum computer can yield game-changing impacts in technology, allowing to tackle key problems for humankind such as energy production or drug development. A route towards a quantum computer relies on exotic electronic excitations known as parafermions, that do not appear in natural materials, and are extremely elusive to find in the laboratory. In this project we aim to develop a theoretical route to create parafermions using graphene as the key building block, a material purely made of carbon that can be isolated in a layer of one atom thickness. Building on top of recent ground breaking experiments, we will explore how taking several graphene layers with a specific angle between them, one can create a hybrid compound in which the properties of electrons can be controlled. By tackling key issues in two dimensional physics such as fractionalization and topological phenomena we will ultimately provide a route to the highly elusive parafermionic mode.
