Project description
The project examines the historical, cultural and societal dimensions of the relationship between humans and ticks in Finland. It seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of discussions about ticks in the Finnish society from the early 20th century to the present. In addition, the project seeks to disentangle the various strands of knowledge about ticks in both popular and scientific discourse. In doing so, it clarifies how the proliferation of ticks and knowledge about them have influenced human ideas and practices within the natural world. By studying the knowledge base, as well as fears connected to ticks, the project provides tools for policy makers and other parties involved in rural planning. Moreover, examining ticks in connection with anthropogenic environmental changes, the project will deepen our understanding about how human and local communities experience and live amidst the Anthropocene.
