Project description
Due to the demographic changes, it is a topical question to increase understanding about who stays healthy and whose health declines after retirement. International data provide cultural and context specific aspects. We use person-oriented methods, identifying distinct groups of people likely to follow similar development in their health, and what social and behavioural factors determine maintenance of health, or declining health. Follow-up survey data are collected in a population that was in their midlife in 2000, having different exposures and social environments, as compared to earlier generations. Changes in the nature of exposures during working life and after highlight the need to study the development of health of the next elderly cohort, which is notably larger than any previous one. Such information is urgently needed for all policies to support maintenance of health and well-being, considering their social and other determinants, promoting sustainable societies and economies
