Project description
Our environment presents continuous challenges to an organism, such as changes in food availability or composition, to which our tissues must adapt without losing future capacity to adjust. Stem cells balance tissue function and renewal by making fate decisions to either produce more stem cells, or to differentiate into functional cells. These decisions must integrate information on multiple levels spanning from physiology of the entire organism, to events occurring inside individual stem cells. Ultimately, regulatory signals from the stem cell environment must converge at the level of genome reading. This project studies how the many levels controlling stem cell fate decisions combine to form a robust hierarchy of regulatory networks keeping us alive, while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow.
