Project description
This project aims at characterizing the environment shared by acute myeloid leukemia (AML, a very lethal form of cancer) and osteoblasts (the cells that make the bones), because that environment creates a “sanctuary” where AML hide from chemotherapy. If we get to understand this environment, however, we can spot AML even if hidden and we can find new ways to kill them. Our research, a collaboration between Oulu, Turku, Helsinki, Cambridge and Chicago Universities, makes use of cell cultures, animal models and cells isolated from AML patients and will give us a better understanding how AML works and how we can kill it by targeting the environment. In addition, we will generate “big data” that will be shared with the research community to allow spreading of knowledge and facilitate new discoveries.
