The EnergyNet project will study the technological and regulatory conditions to enable a smooth transformation from the existing fossil-fuel-dominated energy system to a micro-grid-based Energy Internet fully supplied by renewable sources. EnergyNet will focus on three core aspects: (1) an algorithm that manages the electricity inventory of micro-grids as packets like the data internet, (2) a wireless communication system that supports applications of low latency, ultra-reliability or massive connectivity, and (3) the regulatory conditions that would allow the energy internet based on micro-grids to emerge and grow under the existing rules to then become dominant by 2050. The proposed research will be tested via analytical models, computer simulations and a proof-of-concept demonstration at LUT. EnergyNet ultimate goal is to change the way the distribution electricity grid works, a small contribution to a socially sustainable and ecologically friendly future society
