Project description
The targets of Paris climate agreement of limiting the increase in global average temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels cannot be reached by greenhouse gas (GHG: CO2, CH4, N2O) emission reductions alone. Effective ways to decrease CO2 in the atmosphere, by storing more carbon to terrestrial environments, including agricultural soils, are critically needed. INAR RI Agriculture establishes a unique research platform in Finland to quantify the climate and air quality impacts of northern agricultural soils. INAR RI Agriculture builds three state-of-the-art field measurement stations for long-term and continuous measurements of GHG and reactive nitrogen emissions from agricultural mineral soils, complemented with movable field stations on peat soils, and a state-of-the-art stable isotope laboratory for detailed process studies. Such an infrastructure network is critically needed to develop efficient measures for soil carbon storage, GHG mitigation and to support climate policy.
