Project description
Accurate timing of development during a yearly growth cycle is critical for the survival and successful reproduction of plants. Plants are typically well adapted to local climate and they use light and temperature as principal signals to control development. However, control of development and adaptation is poorly understood at the molecular level especially in perennial plants. The aim of this project is to explore natural variation in gene regulatory elements and reveal the role of this variation in the control of gene expression and climate adaptation. The project is based on a large collection of woodland strawberry clones collected across Europe. The genomes of all clones have been sequenced , which enables us to explore adaptation mechanisms at the population level. These new knowledge will facilitate the breeding of new cultivars that are better adapted to local climates.
