Project description
The wellbeing effects of culture are widely recognized, and previous research shows that active cultural consumers are associated with higher education and income than their passive counterparts. While most research so far is concentrated on the active cultural consumers, this project focuses on the culturally disengaged Finns. It asks how the leisure time of the culturally disengaged groups is constructed, how they talk about or motivate their disengagement and how Finnish cultural policy could function in a more equal way. The project draws on a large body of focus group interviews and individual interviews with culturally disengaged Finns. The main site of research is the University of Tampere, but a significant part of it will be completed at the University of Manchester. The research engages in the scientific debate on the stratification of cultural consumption, and the information produced will be valuable for academics and policy-makers alike.
