Project description
In the HIERARCH research project, the studies concentrate on the multihierarchical strengthening of protective coating materials to develop extreme chemical, mechanical and thermal stability for ambient and high temperatures. The focus is in a) studies of the microstructure formation of hierarchical precipitates in highly metastable, even amorphous, gas atomized powders and b) improvement of the initial cohesion between the splat boundaries of thermally sprayed coating by utilizing surface modification treatment of the powder. By combining the latest understanding in alloy design for powder manufacturing and by the understanding of the lamella cohesion phenomena various modern high kinetic thermal spray technologies, the coating solutions can be pushed forward to several new applications especially against combined effects of erosion and chlorine corrosion attack in biomass and waste to energy (WTE) boilers.
