Adaptation is critical for organisms’ success in the changing world. Atlantic salmon is a species with conservation concern. Populations are shrinking, in both absolute number and age, but due to the large geographic range, it is challenging to identify the underlying mechanism. Here, I monitor diet acquisition (what they eat), and metabolic rate (how they eat), two components resource utilization as the subject of adaptation. By combining old-research data collected in sea-surveys and archived scale material spanning 50 years, and by isolating DNA from them, I measure how genes change across time and space associated with changing environment (temperature, food-webs). Based on mostly old research material, I address important biological questions economically and environmentally friendly. My results will be instrumental for predicting evolutionary changes associated with changes in food-webs, and eventually understanding how Atlantic salmon will survive in the changing world.
