This research project is interested in everyday technology use and the possible changes in social skills brought about by new communication technologies. It suggests an empirical and micro-analytic approach to the situated use of mobile technologies - typically smartphones or tablets - by younger and older adults. Using the qualitative method of multimodal conversation analysis, the project studies when and how these technologies are used, manipulated and talked about in face-to-face encounters in different languages. With the help of video recordings, transcriptions of the on-going talk and short surveys, the project team will compare if older and younger participants use their mobile devices differently or not. The project aims to check if so-called “digital natives” and “digital immigrants” behave and communicate in fundamentally different ways, and to describe how people engage with new technologies, regardless of their age or culture.
