When ice starts to melt, the thickness is thinning and the ice-covered area is shrinking. The shrinking of the ice-covered area is partly dominated by a process called lateral melting. This processes in large scale could trigger a positive feedback between energy absorption in water and melting of ice. Because when ice is partly melted away, the open leads between ice floes have very small surface albedo leading to a large amount of solar radiation absorbed by the waterbody. This consequently increases the surface area of ice contacting with water, therefore, accelerating the overall melting both at the lateral and bottom of ice floes. This positive feedback may have a climate impact in the Polar Oceans in summer and boreal region in spring. We, therefore, initiate a research proposal to investigate lateral melting. We are aiming physical processes of lateral melt through various field observations and parameterizations
