Project description
The aim of AlgaLEAF is to develop a novel technology that draws inspiration from the plant leaf. The purpose of the technology is to enable sustainable production chemicals by utilizing CO2 and light as an unlimited energy source, thus mitigating climate change. By combining hierarchical matrices and engineered photosynthetic microbes, we intend to produce a leaf-like architecture, where each layer is responsible for a given task: (i) protection from dehydration, (ii) optimal light and CO2 fixation, (iii) influx of water/gases, (iv) gas/water exchange, (v) efflux of photosynthetic products. The consortium relies on extensive knowledge of the partners in bio-based materials, surface science and photosynthesis, which ensures the project success. AlgaLEAF concept will pave the way for advanced biotechnological applications utilising solar energy and CO2 as feedstock via natural and/or engineered photosynthetic systems, which will produce majority of bio-based products and materials.
