Project description
Nineteenth-century Romanticism reflected the contradiction of cosmopolitanism and nationalism, as well as the effects of industrialisation to natural surroundings. The project applies the methods of the digital humanities to research the spatiality in English and German Romanticism (1790–1840) by geoparsing locational data from an exceptionally big textual corpus. The primary sources include fiction but also the metadata of travelogues and correspondence. The results of text mining will be visualised as superimposed maps, which produce new knowledge about the relationship of centre and periphery, or urban and natural areas in Romanticism. The research is implemented in the department of Cultural History at the University of Turku. For more information see
