Project description
This research looks into changes in energy efficiency and CO2-emissions in the most important industry in Finland taking into account its recent development. Our work is focused on the transformation of pulp and paper technology and its future opportunities as biorefinery platform. Decline in energy use and CO2 per unit output is accepted as basis of fulfilling our commitment to Paris agreement. We do not, however, know how much of this trend is caused by small energy efficiency improvements vs large investments. The role of mill closures and new processes and products is also unclear in reducing energy use. In this research we aim to create a multiparameter generic model for pulp and paper mills, use the compiled database on Finnish P&P mill energy usage and CO2 emissions to study the role of mill closures and capacity upgrades to energy use and emissions, study the effect of new bioprocesses integrated to future mills and finish the "Energy use in P&P" book for publication.
