Project description
New security technologies often use video cameras and machine vision to enable 'smart' weapons that can navigate their surroundings without direct human control. And surveillance systems are designed to flag suspicious behaviour without human oversight. But how do these technologies see security, insecurity, danger or civility? Are they aware that they may be wrong, and that they may harm innocent civilians? We don't really know, because our ideas about national, individual or other kinds of security have not been systematically scrutinized in relation to new visual technologies. This project surveys scientific, political and lay debates to understand how machines understand us - the people they're observing - and how they understand themselves.
