Project description
After the turn of the millennium ecological dystopias have become worldwide phenomena in contemporary literature and popular culture. In these pessimistic portrayals of the near future the human race is represented as an endangered species, slowly or rapidly heading for extinction. While contemporary literature frequently wrestles with ethical dilemmas concerning nature, it also seeks to express new collective fears and to shape collective imagination. This study shows how environmental risks, terrorism and catastrophes have become a central thematic field in contemporary literature, and it provides new Northern and Arctic perspectives on the ways global environmental risks and the near future are perceived and imagined in Finland and other Western societies. The project increases interdisciplinarity, creates a more comprehensive approach to environmental issues and improves the understanding of environmental crisis as cultural, historical and ethical phenomena.
