Project description
The research project explores the phenomenon of expatriate entrepreneurship. The term refers to the creation of high-growth businesses by immigrants, who move to a new country primarily for the purpose of starting a business. The goal of the project is to examine the social and economic impacts this distinctive group of entrepreneurs provides on the entrepreneurial ecosystem and the local economy in the receiving country. Unlike earlier economic studies on the impact of immigrant entrepreneurship, this project adopts an economic sociology perspective and suggests that entrepreneurial migration is best understood as a social action embedded in the structure of social relations. By analyzing these relations based on a set of longitudinal quantitative data collected in Finland, Denmark, France and Chile, the study results in the evaluation of the socio-economic impacts of expatriate entrepreneurs and the development of policy recommendations for retaining these immigrants.
