Project description
Understanding the relationships between alcohol intoxication and affect is vital, given the numerous adverse affect-related outcomes of alcohol use such as aggression. There is, however, considerable variation in the effects of alcohol on affect, and vice versa, between individuals, as well as within individuals from one time to another; alcohol can act as a mood-enhancer but also increase negative affect. I will in the proposed project investigate dynamic short-term fluctuations between affect and alcohol use by asking participants to rate their mood and intoxication levels using a mobile-phone app in real-time as they drink alcohol in naturalistic settings. Using this information, I will analyze the temporal dynamic processes between affect and alcohol use, and try to identify distinct groups of affect-alcohol use patterns that could predict aggression as an outcome. In addition, I will test whether assumptions of a widely used theoretical model hold true in naturalistic settings.
