Project description
The research explores the role of creative individuals in the processes of cultural memory. It examines a corpus of published and unpublished life writings, memoirs and autobiographical fiction written by persons with Ingrian background during the 20th century in Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Russia. The corpus reflects the turbulent twentieth century of Ingrians including the Russian revolution, repressions and migrations. These texts represent diverse genres and they are treated as carriers and reconfigurations of transnational cultural memory. By combining methodologies of cultural memory studies, folklore studies, and oral history research, the research analyses 1) what kind of cultural resources are used in these writings, and 2) what kind of communicative and rhetorical functions these resources carry. By developing methodological tools the research articulates the interplay between the cultural and the individual, the collective and the personal, and conventions and creativity.
