Project description
The project aims at integrating land use, water footprint and raw material consumption together with climate change impacts into the decision making regarding the decarbonization of our energy system. Traditionally, our path to a carbon neutral society is defined by economic measures. A paradigm shift is proposed, for critical environmental impacts and their interaction driving energy transition. The Prospective Energy System (POLES) model will be adapted and further used to evaluate Europe’s energy mix for 2050 and make strategic solutions minimizing overall environmental impacts. Integrating multiple and co-dependent environmental impacts, also known as the Nexus approach, into energy strategies represents a major step towards a cleaner society, and promises a major scientific breakthrough. The output of the research will provide an understanding of the strategic stakes to mitigate negative anthropogenic impacts whilst securing energy safety and security.
