Project description
Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are molecules capable of retaining magnetization in the absence of an external magnetic field for prolonged periods of time. In a sense, they “remember” information written to them by an external magnetic field. They have been suggested as possible candidates for various microscopic quantum technologies. In this project, I propose to develop an approach for computational simulation of the dynamic magnetic properties of SMMs. The dynamic properties, which are currently not very well understood, govern for how long information is stored in a SMM and what instigates its disappearance. The results will be used both to deepen our understanding on the fundamental physics of SMMs and to design a new generation of SMMs with greatly improved magnetic properties compared to the current SMMs. This will ultimately pave the way for technological applications in the future with both industrial and social impact.
