Project description
Peatland microbes are confronted with the toxic metalloids arsenic and antimony for a variety of reasons, ranging from atmospheric contaminant deposition to input of mine wastewaters. Microbes have found ways to utilize those otherwise toxic compounds, and some of them could potentially be used for bioremediation of contaminated waters. However, there are still large gaps in our knowledge about the microbial key players involved in transformations of arsenic and antimony in peatlands. It is not clear, who those microbes are, whether they are active in peat soil, and through what mechanisms they participate in arsenic and antimony transformation and removal. Thus, this project tries to fill in some of those gaps by a) assessing the diversity and expression level of genes involved in those transformations, b) resolving pathways in the cycles of arsenic and antimony that are not sufficiently described to date, and c) isolation of microbes with potential use in bioremediation.
