Project description
This project aims to develop novel methodology for predicting Space Climate, i.e., variations of solar activity and its effects in near-Earth space and atmosphere in timescales from a month up to tens years. Most current long-term predictions of solar activity focus on sunspots which are only a rough measure of one type of solar activity. We will instead concentrate on predicting long-term variations of solar wind, geomagnetic activity and the flux of energetic particles in near-Earth space by utilizing recently developed long-term reconstructions of their past variation. Recent research has verified that these space climate variations have a significant impact not only in near-Earth space but also on terrestrial climate variations in inter-annual and decadal timescales. Motivated by these exciting results, we will also, for the first time, study the feasibility of using these space climate predictions to improve seasonal and decadal predictions of climate variations.
