Project description
The Arctic System is becoming different and this is being reflected in thinner sea ice and a reduction in the spatial extent of sea ice and thus more open water in the Arctic. However, we really don't’ have distinct evidence that these changes in sea ice are indeed leading to changes in moisture sources, shifts in stream and river water discharge, altered traits of snow; collectively leading to a different type of water cycle in Finland. This project uses the fundamental chemistry of water in an isotope forensic study of the Arctic water cycle based in N Finland. There are several applications of this research project and it’s data. First, the findings will provide new information for water resource managers. Second, our improved understanding of the connections between Arctic climate and hydrological processes will increase the capability of northern communities to adapt to the changing Arctic. Third, our data will allow enhance forecasting of water resources using advanced modeling.
