Project description
Many developing countries have a low-level water infrastructure and thus some 844 million people are currently exposed to contaminated drinking water. On the other hand, the amount of different micropollutants (plastic monomers, pharmaceuticals, personal care product residues etc.) is increasing in the environment. The project aims to develop a new kind of water filter capable of tackling both of the aforementioned issues: disinfection and micropollutant removal. The filter will be prepared using geopolymer technology, that is, alkali activation of aluminosilicate materials to obtain a porous and durable structure. The main advantages compared to currently existing ceramic or zeolite filter materials is more simple, low-energy, and cost-efficient manufacturing method. The filter material will be modified to have antimicrobial and/or catalytic activity. It can be used for disinfection as such and with peroxide-based oxidant, it is capable of advanced oxidation.
