Project description
Due to increased life expectancy, the number of individuals with dementia is estimated to nearly double every 20 years, resulting globally in about 115 million =60 year olds with dementia by 2050. It is not known why some people experience cognitive decline in middle age whereas others can maintain their cognitive functioning in their 90s. By studying three longitudinal samples covering life span from 20 to over 100 years, this project examines the role of the protective and risk factors of cognitive impairment and dementia from middle age to the oldest-old (those who are 90 years or older). Specific focus of this project is to study cognitive aging in the oldest-old, fastest growing population segment in many countries, including Finland. In the future, healthcare system will see more individuals who are over 90 years of age. Unfortunately, the knowledge on the cognitive aging of this age group is limited.
